Welding Inspection
Principle
The purpose of welding inspection is to determine if a weldment meets the acceptance criteria of a specific code, standard, or other document. The welding inspector must be thoroughly familiar with welding processes, welding procedures, welder qualifications, materials, the limitation of weld testing, be able to read drawings, prepare and keep records, prepare and make reports and make responsible judgments.
Levels
There are two categories, Visual, and Non-Destructive Testing Inspectors.
There are three levels of qualification.
The Inspector shall be able to perform inspections or to verify that the work inspected, and records maintained, conform to the requirements of the applicable standards.

Level I , Level 1 Welding Inspector
Work under the supervision of a Level 2 or 3,
shall be capable of:
Verifying that the inspection procedures are in accordance with the relevant standards, codes and drawings.
Verifying that the specified base metal and welding materials are used and maintained in proper condition as specified.
Verifying if the preparations and the executions of the joints fulfill the requirements of the welding procedure, and are in conformity with the drawings.
Examine and evaluate welds in accordance with the established welding procedure.
Supervise and examine the work of the takers and welders.
Consign the inspection results.
Write clear and precise reports

Level II , Level II Welding Inspector
In addition to the capabilities of a Level 1, shall be capable of:
Confirm that the welding equipment to be used for the work is appropriate for the process specified in the welding procedure and has the capacity to produce the specified welds, and that the welding equipment is in good working order.
Confirm that the takers, welding operators, and welders have been properly qualified in accordance with the applicable codes and standards and that their qualifications are current and permit them to use the welding procedures specified for the work.
Verify that only specified and accepted welding procedures are used for the work.
Identify substandard quality of work during fabrication, and examine the finished work for conformance to the requirements of the applicable codes, standards, specifications, and drawings

Level III , Level III Welding Inspector
In addition to the capabilities of a Level 1 and 2, shall be capable of:
Interpret of specifications and codes, preparation of welding inspection procedures, and implementation of welding inspection aspects of quality programs.
Ensure that non-destructive and other examinations have been performed to the degree specified by contract documents, using qualified personnel, and that the results have been duly recorded and demonstrating knowledge of:
Welding processes and welding procedures.
Welding metallurgy.
Weld defects - their cause and effects.
Weld repair.
Principles of quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC).

EDuties Welding Inspector Duties
Inspection of Work Verify that only approved or qualified welding procedures are used for the work.
Verify that the edge preparation or joint geometry meets the requirements of the welding procedure and drawings.
Verify that the specified filler metals are used and that filler metals are maintained in proper condition, per requirements, or as recommended by the manufacturer.
Verify that the technique and performance of each welder, welding operator, and tack welder are as specified.
Verify that the work conforms to requirements of the applicable standards, drawings, or other documents.
Verify that the work inspected is identified and documented in accordance with specified requirements.
Non-Destructive Examination Perform the required visual examinations.
Verify that the required visual and other non-destructive examinations have been performed by qualified personnel in the specified manner. Review the resulting information to ensure that the results are complete.
Perform any further non-destructive examinations that are required, provided qualifications are in conformance to the specified requirements.
Records
Prepare clear and concise reports and verify that records of the welding procedure, the welding procedure qualification, the welder`s, welding operator`s and tack welder`s qualifications, the control of welding materials, and the results of examinations are maintained.
Design
Preparation of plans, drawings, procedures, inspection requirements and acceptance criteria, and/or specifications for weldments.
Production
Planning, control, supervision, and/or application of base metals and filler metals in the preparation and completion of production weldments.
Construction
Fabrication, erection, and/or supervision of personnel in erection of welded assemblies or sub-assemblies.
Quality Control
Detection and measurement of weld discontinuities or the supervision of individuals so involved. Specification of quality control (QC) methods, procedures, and acceptance criteria.
Review of quality control programs of vendors, subcontractors, or other organizations.
Quality Assurance S
pecification of quality assurance (QA) methods, procedures, or criteria for employer or client. Review quality assurance programs of vendors, subcontractors, or other organizations.
Conduct or supervise quality audits of vendors, subcontractors, or other organizations.
Examination
Specification of detection and measurement of weld discontinuities, preparation of documented (written) procedures for visual or other non-destructive evaluation processes, or destructive tests to be applied.
Supervision of one or more technicians engaged in examination testing.
Application of visual or other non-destructive evaluation processes to a written procedure.
Repair
Supervision of personnel performing weld repair.
** Technicians Performing Non-Destructive Testing
A welding inspector who performs radiographic, ultrasonic, eddy current, magnetic particle, or liquid Penetrant examinations shall be certified in accordance with the applicable requirements of CGSB Standard CAN/CGSB-48.9712, which covers the certification of technicians who perform such non-destructive examinations.(Canada)
